Films de l'Europe Toasts to Thirty-Three Years

On May 14th, Les Films de l’Europe would celebrate their 33rd anniversary at auditorium Michel Debré of the Institut National du Service Public. That's the opportunity for the strasbourg film production company to put everything in a retrospective. It's an opportunity for the Strasbourg-based production company to reflect on the journey it has undertaken since its inception in 1991

Make a reminder in your calendars for this significant date. Next Tuesday, May 14th, at 7 p.m., Films de l'Europe will be in celebration mode. And for good reason – they will be marking their thirty-third anniversary. Indeed, it was in 1991 that Jean-Luc Nachbauer, producer and director, decided to establish his production company, which he named "Films de l'Europe" as a tribute to the Council of Europe, with which he had long collaborated.

An evening to rewind the clock !

No, we're not changing to summertime, but almost ! To commemorate the company's anniversary, the Films de l'Europe team aims to provide guests with a unique experience that takes them on a journey through time, from the past to the present. From Jean-Luc Nachbauer's early short films in the 90s to Clément Nachbauer's promotional clips, and the documentaries co-directed by father and son for ARTE, this evening promises to be a cinematic journey through time. A retrospective of the best creations by Films de l'Europe in Alsace, as well as elsewhere in France and around the world, will be showcased. It's a genuine voyage through the years, landscapes, and seasons that the hundreds of invited guests can expect.

From One Nachbauer to Another

This anniversary event will also be an opportunity for Jean-Luc Nachbauer to reflect on his thirty-three years at the helm of the company he founded. For over a year now, Jean-Luc has been collaborating with his son Clément, who served as the director of photography for the documentary "Alsace, Terre de Cigognes" aired on ARTE, and as the director for the music video "De l'épi au demi" released in February 2024. Clément consistently serves as the cinematographer in the majority of Films de l'Europe's recent productions and projects.

With Clément's distinctive cinematic style, the successful collaboration between father and son has paved the way for assured modernity in Films de l'Europe's future productions.

De l'épi au demi

The screening of the film was well received at the Salon International de l'Agriculture Brasseurs de France stand on this 27th of February. In the presence of various personalities from the brewing world, gathered to discover our promotional short film, the calls for wide distribution of it have been unanimous.

«An authentic industrial film»

Tracing the various stages through which each beer bottle goes, our film provides a comprehensive overview of the diversity within the brewing industry and the individuals who work within it. From hop growers and maltsters to brewers, beer experts, and restaurateurs, this clip shines a spotlight on the various actors involved. Described as 'an authentic industry film' by Magalie Filhue, Secretary-General of Brasseurs de France, the video, spanning 2 minutes and 35 seconds, is advocated for widespread distribution.

Highlighting beer from its creation to consumption, including its recycling, our clip has leveraged the four elements of earth, air, water, and fire to unveil beer as the sum of these components. According to Jean-Luc Nachbauer, producer of this clip and president of Films de l'Europe, 'the reference to the four elements was made to establish beer as the fifth of these elements.

Captured across three seasons, this film intricately weaves together a palette of colors, moods, and personalities, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of the brewing industry.

Fiction !

An event that inspires thousands of filmmakers from all backgrounds.

The Nikon Film Festival, which has been offering since 2009 the opportunity for everyone to submit a short film of less than 2 minutes and 20 seconds to a renown jury. This year, Les Films de l'Europe contributed with 'Feu à volonté'.

Fire away !

For the 2024 edition of the Nikon Film Festival, the organizers chose the theme of fire, inviting filmmakers to explore it in its broadest sense. This allowed participants the freedom to interpret and present their audiovisual creations accordingly. In the short film "Feu à volonté", produced by Les Films de l'Europe and directed by Olivier Arnold, fire played a central role.

It symbolized growth, unpredictability, and perhaps mirrored the temperament of the filmmaker from Haut-Rhin, known for his collaborative work with Les Films de l'Europe. In the film, Arnold invites viewers to a birthday celebration where candles multiply endlessly, defying the protagonist's futile attempts to extinguish them with his weary breath. Alongside him, a whimsical accordionist adds to the absurdity of the situation. However, the scene takes a dramatic turn when the candle blower, driven by a fleeting madness, decides to end the spectacle.

With its success, the Nikon Film Festival has drawn slightly fewer than 3000 films this year, all eager to be among the fifty selected for the final on April 10th.

A third narrative short with Arnold

Albert, Socrate et moi & Un dernier tour de piste

It is now the 3rd collab with Olivier Arnold. The first two are actually in festivals now and they're named "Un dernier tour de Piste" and "Albert, Socrate et moi".

"Supporting independent artists is also one of our missions," Clément Nachbauer, director of photography at Les Films de l'Europe, readily declares before laughing as he adds, "especially when they're as quirky as Olivier."
